Knife Girl releases debut ‘Metro EP’

Metro EP arrives via Soliti on the 2nd of July.

As a casual reminder to those of you who haven’t been paying attention, Knife Girl is the new project from 20 year old Lili Aslo, who some may know from a series of releases and collaborations under the moniker olli over the past five or so years.  The first new music from Knife Girl came in the form of her single “give it 2 yu” which was released in June 2021. Now, Soliti are delighted to present Knife Girl’s debut EP release Metro.

The Metro EP redefines the bedroom pop sound of previous material released under the olli moniker – ambient experimentation makes way for deep grooves and catchy top lines. Knife Girl tells us of the EP “I’ve compiled some songs I recorded at home the past year for this EP. Some are more goofy than others, but they all represent some part of me.”

“…with its candy-coated swirl electropop genre mixing, is like immersing yourself in a never-withering late-night vibe. ” C-Heads

“Knife Girl takes a nonconformist journey through genre with the warped and wonderful ‘Metro’ EP” Earmilk

“…it looks as though Lili’s rebirth as Knife Girl sets the stage for an exciting new phase in her blossoming career.” Notion

“Metro EP is, in a word, fresh. It’s soundscapes feel fresh and airy, and the shadows of history can’t touch it.” Desibeli

Rumba shared the video

“Knife Girl’s Metro EP is a really great bedroom / feel / r & b / indiepop hybrid” Päivän Biisit

“…introvert whispering and pounding has been replaced by a snappy, dancing and comfortable home-made mid-1980s synafunk whose fresh bubbling is reminiscent of both Madonna’s early Singles and La Roux” Kulttuuritoimitus

As did Colors

“Listening to Knife Girl’s “Metro” EP is like trip down memory lane. Delivering all sorts of musical genres from now till back in the 80s. We highly recommend you to check out this eclectic mix of songs out and discover Knife Girl’s talent in creating infectious electronic pop.” TURTLENEK

“The work is rich in variety, but it is characterized by a fragile and transparent sound as a whole.” Takashi

“A contagious mix of rhythms, a whirlwind of sounds that will not leave you indifferent. This project reveals a real talent for musicality that we advise you to discover without further delay” Iggy Magazine

“Weaving candied production with hazy, late-night melodies, the track harks back to an 80s vibe and transports you to a dance floor of old.” Dummy Mag

“‘Metro’ is a funky and fresh catchy tune that promises mega good summer vibes. The video clip is a good counterpart to what some might find cool. Very cool!!” Tonspion

KNIFE GIRL – METRO EP (Soliti 090) Release date 02/07/2021

Track by track from
 Lili Aslo
1. Metro

“Musically this song was inspired by old school Afro-funk and William Onyeabor. This song is about getting home from a get-together on public transport when you are drunk and high on drugs”
2. give it 2 yu
“For the sound of this track I took inspiration from various disco-funk records from the 80’s. Lyrically it’s a parody of the sexual and objectifying lyrics you would often find in those records.”
3. How U Really Feel
“My take on a break-up pop song. The music is inspired by modern Indie Pop acts like The 1975.”
4. in Da summer
“A more melancholic cut, it’s about thinking about your life and relationship. Musically it’s similar to Frank Ocean and Zach Villere.
5. if you leave me now
“The slow dance closer, this one reminds me of Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark.”
6. Metro (Radio Mix)

Press reaction for “give it 2 yu”

“With electric production and an eclectic range of instruments culminating in a dance-worthy sound, the producer blends deep disco vocals and sickly sweet meoldies in a turly complimentary manner. And, with playfully suggestive lyrics standing as a parody of the 80s genre, the song is both sonically impeccable and witty in nature.” Wonderland Magazine

“…it’ll have you feeling retro disco vibes with its bright synths and catchy hooks. The deeper vocals give the song an 80s house spin too and adds to its irresistible dance nature.” Abduction Radiation

“Knife Girl’s perfectly goofy and stylistically brave new single “ Loudness

Knife Girl were featured at Niche Music “‘Give It 2 Yu’は7/2発売のデビューEP『Metro』収録曲。これまでの中毒性のあるポップ加減は保ちつつ、ベッドルーム感のあるプロダクションからより洗練された音像で最高ですね。音のアプローチが豊富な人なので他の曲も楽しみだなー。”

“Knife Girl brings a sharp, well-chiseled brand of licked alternative pop to the table.” Sodwee

“Playful witty, two-handed disco-pop, this is a groovy deconstruction of electro-pop and funk-pop is ripe with floor-filling, dappling synths. It somehow dissects the line between Right Said Fred and Cameo; it’s sure to put a grin on your face!” God Is In the TV (Tracks of the week)

“After one listen you are charmed, after two times you are already dancing along and after three times you are already singing along with all your heart. Strong debut, that much is certain.” Dansende Beren

“Awesome 80’s/Prince / bedroom disco” Päivän Biisit

“An excellent excuse to get acquainted with her work” Mishka DJ

“give it 2 yu” sounds like an 80s disco banger,” 3fach
