Aleski reveals insights into “Muscle Memory”
“After I had released the last batch of singles in 2022 I desperately needed a break. The whole process was such an uphill battle that I felt creatively drained for months after. Fast forward a year, I had collected some faint ideas of songs but nothing complete yet. I started to wonder where my instincts for songwriting had gone, especially lyrics. One day I just felt so defeated and decided to write about not being able to write. I was pleading for that creative muscle memory to lead the way again. I really learned how valuable it is to just show up day after day and just try to put pen to paper. Get all the ideas out, cause that’s when the good ideas can have room to grow.”

Q&A with Telephone Romeo

Has your location and upbringing played a role in your sound/musical style?
Probably in more ways than I am aware of. Like most Finnish teenage band kids in the 2000’s I was into the heavier stuff, which still influences the more grittier sound choices. Those influences are of course filtered through life experience and expanded musical horizons but I think that is the reason I’m making this alt/rock thing in the first place and never quite deviated away from it too much. A live band has always been the starting place for any kind of piece of music for Telephone Romeo.

What are your inspirations/concepts for Telephone Romeo?
It sort of works as an alter ego or a reflection or this other more idealized and more wise version of myself that can say the hard things. Rarely when I’m talking about a you or a they in a song am I really referencing any other people specifically. Oftentimes they are conversations between me and Romeo. It’s a songwriting tool if anything.

Talk about the creative process – does the music or lyrical idea come first? Do you write on a guitar or keyboard? What are your processes when creating/writing tracks/songs?
For most of these songs, I can happily say, me and the acoustic guitar are back together. We started out really young, just a couple of middle school sweethearts. I had some wild years with synths and programming that really gave me a lot of new ways to think about creating musical ideas. But now it’s back to form! If it works as an acoustic song, it works in any form.

What challenges do you feel you face as a new artist in the 2020s?
Oh brother.. Where do I start?

What does the future hold and how do you hope that future unfolds for Telephone Romeo?
I just wish to not back down or hold anything back since I really do not have anything to lose.
